As of August 15, 2022, There have been 27,889 deaths from gun violence by all causes. There have been 419 mass shootings and 19 mass murders. There have been 215 children between the ages of 0-11, as well as 852 teenagers that have been killed by gun violence. There have been 24,849 individuals injured by gun violence. Where do occur?  In our schools. In our homes. At our places of employment. Where do they end up? In our hospitals. Who takes care of them? Physicians, Nurses and allied health. The devastating effects of gun violence is vicerally seen in healthcare. In 2018, the NRA told doctors to "stay in their lane". 

We save lives. We protect those most vulnerable. This is our lane. We are not going anywhere. In this episode, Amie & Sara speak to Dr. Mark Shapiro, a practicing Hospitalist, creator and host of Explore the Space Podcast and passionate advocate about gun violence in the United States. 

Dr. Mark Shapiro, MD is a practicing Hospitalist &; is the creator, producer &; host of Explore The Space Podcast, a show focused on bringing those who provide healthcare and those who seek healthcare closer together through conversations with leaders from across the spectrum. He is also a TEDx speaker, delivering his first TEDx in March, 2021.

Dr. Shapiro has been in full-time clinical practice as a Hospitalist since 2006. He has served as both Hospitalist Medical Director and member of the Board of Directors. He earned a BA in history at University of California-Los Angeles, attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine and completed his Internal Medicine residency at University of California-San Diego.
