The Gritty Nurse Podcast

Aug 25, 2022

In Canada, over six million people avoid seeking treatment from the dentist each year. It's not the "fear" of going to see the dentist, but the fear of going absolutely broke doing it. But missing dentist's appointments has costs- it degrades the quality of life, and can introduce severe health problems down the road. At the end of the day, to decrease healthcare costs, keep a healthy community and reduce socioeconomic inequities- Canada NEEDS a universal dental care plan. In this episode, Amie and Sara speak with Dr. Brandon Doucet, a Dentist and advocate about the importance of having a universal dental health program.

Brandon Doucet is a Nova Scotia-based dentist with interests in surgery and public health. He is the founder of the group Coalition for Dentalcare, which is a group that seeks to highlight the shortcomings of Canada’s dental care system while advocating for a more humane alternative.

Coalition for Dental Care is an advocacy group started by passionate dentists and dental students. They do not receive funding from any source; all members are volunteers. The team is comprised of dentists, dental hygienists, dental students, allied healthcare workers, and members of the public who believe that access to dental services should be available to all Canadians, regardless of socioeconomic status.
